Tribal baskets from Africa are some of the most rare. They are hand-made by tribal people who actually live in villages. In the last 10 years, basketry from Africa has gone from an almost extinct occupation to a thriving cottage industry involving over 3,000 families. African baskets are much more time-consuming and intricate to weave. It takes young trainees 2 years before they can weave an adequate basket, and 6-8 years to learn all the stitches and motif patterns. Usually only weavers with 10 or more years can create baskets of sufficient quality to be sold. Older men and women who have 30-40 years experience create the masterpieces. It can take up to 2 weeks or more to weave a quality basket, and the dying is done naturally. Most African baskets are one of a kind and have the weavers individual personality and style woven into each piece.
